William Houston Powers

William Houston Powers was the father of my grandmother, Mary Adeline Powers McDougal and her ten siblings.  William was born on May 19, 1862, in Chattanooga, Hamilton County, Tennessee to William O. Powers and Elizabeth “Betty” White.

William married Sophronia Elizabeth Cagle on March 14, 1886, in Marshall, Alabama. She was born March 9, 1870, in Guntersville, Marshall County, Alabama to Andrew Jackson Cagle and Frances A B Hatcher. 

The two of them had ten children:

William married a second time in 1919 in Pawnee, Oklahoma.  This marriage was to widowed Minnie Alzada Zickefoose Stark Powers who was born on July 15, 1892, in Ness County, Kansas.  She previously married Fred Thornton Stark on January 27, 1909, who died in 1918 of Tuberculosis. Minnie and Fred had four children: Thomas J Stark, Herman Francis Stark, John Stark, and Ruth Elizabeth Stark.  William and Minnie had one daughter Minnie Alice Powers (1921-1993) becoming my grandmother’s tenth sibling, the other children grandma’s four step siblings.

As I learn about William Houston Powers and the rich descendants that followed, I have unwrapped many surprises in my family that my siblings and I never knew about.  I am working to record what I have learned of my grandmother’s family and the relatives that are still living today in many places that have surprised myself and my siblings.  This compilation of the Powers family comes through researching online, reading obituaries and old newspaper articles, Facebook messages reaching out to relatives that didn’t know each other before and now have learned we are “cousins” and learning of the “Powers Family Book” that Georgia Powers Jennings completed in the 1990s.  I have copied information from her book to the information that I am compiling to complete many gaps in our family history that we did not previously know.
