Letter from BERTHA POWERS JOHNSON
September 8, at home
Dear Georgia Lee and Family,
Hi Honey! You should never claim me for an Aunt. I have neglected you something terrible.
We just got home August 31 from two weeks visit in Tulsa, Sand Springs and Oklahoma City – everyone was feeling fine and dandy except your Uncle Al Adams – and Uncle Dean. They are not so well. Both have had strokes. Al is the worst one – he is paralyzed in both legs – I feel so sorry for Ida.
I sure have been everything but a sister to your daddy – honest. We get so wrapped up in our own personal affairs, we don’t thing enough of others – honest I am very much ashamed – your Aunt Adeline is still working at the same place. Mike was home, he is now in Portland and going to be a preacher. Pat is in Japan. Will be home this year. Mike is engaged to be married to a girl at the school where he is going. Rose Dean lives in Detroit and she was coming home the first part of September. Pauletta lives in Oklahoma City near her mother and father. Aunt Minnie is fine, also her girls and grandchildren. I never heard any complaints from Ida’s girls either. I didn’t see all of them. We spent one Sunday with Naomi and Mary Elizabeth and Mary’s home. The boys and their families came over. We had a wonderful visit and lots of good food. Barbecued spareribs and baked potatoes and salads and lots of other goodies.
Maybe when your Uncle Carl gets four week’s vacation we will venture out your way. He gets three now. Why can’t you guys visit us?
I have two wonderful teenagers; Carolyn is 16 and Eddie or Edward Ray is 18. Uncle Sam will be getting him soon, I guess. It will break my heart. I can’t start telling you about them because I would be here all day. (Ha). Once you asked about Carl’s parents. They are or were Sandy Thorson (his mother) now Sadie Brown. Swan Johnson is his father now 90 years old. Carl was born in East Chicago on September 29, 1905. We celebrated our anniversary yesterday, our 28th. We were married September 7, 1928, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I am sorry it took me so long to send you this information.
I am going to write a few lines to you daddy, however, it is getting late and we have to take Carolyn to her piano teacher. She has taken for 11 years. She started when she was five years old. So long for now.
Lots of Love, Auntie Bertha

Hello George
I am in the writing mood today. Sorry I did not write sooner. We are all fine, fat and sassy as ever. Sure glad to hear you are well and walking again. I want you to know I actually found the negatives for those watermelon pictures we took years ago. Too save my soul, I could not think whatever happened to them, so one day I pulled out my top buffet drawer and there before my very brown eyes, lay that beautiful package. Now I have them in a safe place, I hop. When I go to town, which will be soon, I’ll leave them to be made and send to you.
We visit with Minnie Alice very often. She lives about 73 miles from us in South Bend, Indiana. We go to see her, then they come to see us, two or three times each year. She has a wonderful husband and four year old daughter.
I guess it would be a good thing if I would quit scribbling and dress to go to town, so I’ll write again one of these days.
So long and good luck. Your Sister Bertha.
